Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio was one of the pivotal figures in the history of Western art. In his short and stormy lifetime, he created a theatrical pictorial style that was as shocking to some as it was new. This direct mode of expression, which, like Annibale Carracci's, rejected the artificiality of Mannerist theory and practice, was ideally suited to the aims of the Counter-Reformation church. In works like this one, Caravaggio inspired others to probe their subject matter for the drama of psychological relationships inherent in traditional themes.

Apprenticed in Milan in 1584, Caravaggio came to Rome in the early 1590s. After a brief period in which he painted mostly half-length figures of sensuous youths with flowers and fruit, he expanded the scope and complexity of his work in two early masterpieces, The Fortune Teller and The Cardsharps. Caravaggio's early biographers state that his work came to the attention of the influential and cultivated Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte, who not only purchased The Cardsharps but also offered the artist quarters in his palace. It was thus through this painting that Caravaggio was introduced to the elite stratum of Roman ecclesiastical society, which soon gave him his first significant opportunity to work on a large scale and for a public forum.

In The Cardsharps, we see two young men playing cards around a gaming table (a backgammon board, commonly perceived at the time as a pernicious attraction for those inclined to vice, has been pushed to one side). An innocent youth studies his hand of cards, while a ruffian looks over his shoulder and signals the next move to his cohort across the table. Regarding the youth with an expressionless stare, the cheat reaches behind his back for the card he knows will egg the dupe on. Caravaggio has treated this subject not as a caricature of vice, as did those Northern artists who had painted vaguely similar pictures before him, but in a novelistic way, in which the interaction of gesture and glance evokes the drama of deception and lost innocence in the most human of terms. The card game depicted is primero, an ancestor to modern-day poker, particularly popular in Rome.

As a result of Caravaggio's success with Cardinal del Monte, he was launched on a career as an important religious painter, and he ceased soon thereafter to paint genre works. Nevertheless, his two masterpieces of this type, The Fortune Teller (known in two versions: Capitoline Museum, Rome; Musee du Louvre, Paris) and The Cardsharps, spawned countless paintings on related themes by artists throughout Europe--not the least of which were Georges de La Tour's Fortune Teller (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) and The Cheat with the Ace of Clubs in the Kimbell (and its variant in the Louvre).

The Cardsharps was stamped on the back with the seal of Cardinal del Monte and was inventoried among his possessions after his death in 1627. Soon thereafter the painting entered the Barberini collection in Rome, whence it passed by descent into the Colonna-Sciarra branch of the family. Since the 1890s its whereabouts had been unknown until its rediscovery in 1987 in a European private collection and its acquisition by the Kimbell.

...handheld shot of the Excalibur casino in Vegas. There are some nice shots to be had of this Casino, but we did not have time. Jon Martin and I got here super late and ended up just walked up and down the strip.

The archiecture and the lights are very interesting at night - and at dusk with a wide angle some winner shots can be had. There are also some buildings I need to go up in and I need to be on time for the Bellagio fountain show...I need to go back, but Vegas is one of my least favorite US cities so this is unlikely to happen unless I'm passing through. Both my visits so far have been just one night as the part of monster roadtrips.

My view on Vegas (keep in mind that I don't gamble) is to go once, make sure you have ice cold AC, cruise up and down the strip 3-4 times especially at night, then head to Utah. The strip is unique, but the rest is ordinary. Ok, I'm exaggerating (actually clubbing is great and shopping is okay). The shows are good too people tell me.

Nevertheless this is how I felt the last time. I was repulsed. I think the sudden change of scenary played a role. We had spent a couple days in Utah exploring canyons and starry skies so coming to Vegas was almost like waking up and cold sweating in the middle of a crummy TV commercial with flashing bright neon lights and loud party goers slapping you in the face. We both wanted to wake up from this crash reintroduction to modern bling so we quickly headed for Death Valley the next day.
